Origins and development

The grounds were established in the 1860s. The large funeral hall was built in 1930. The old crematorium ceased operations in the mid-1990s; the new crematorium opened in 1996. Former crematorium rooms were reused for another funeral hall and an accessible toilet. A memorial commemorates 1,641 victims of the air raid on 14/15 April 1945.

Origins: Established in the 1860s. The cemetery is in Potsdam, Teltower Vorstadt, at Heinrich-Mann-Allee 25, 14473 Potsdam. Its area is approximately 26.5 hectares.

Design and present-day character

The 26.5-hectare New Cemetery is opposite the Old Cemetery. Its large and small funeral halls, present crematorium, historic notable graves and memorial to bombing victims are distinct destinations.

Read this character description together with the development of Potsdam New Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
